This application enables medical professionals and "pro patients" to lookup any ICD-9 and ICD-10 code via free text search, drill into the details of the code, and CONVERT CODES BETWEEN ICD-9 and ICD-10 code systems. The code translation is done using the official matching algorithms published by the Centers of for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the Health and Human Services Department (HHS).

This is the first mobile app that helps the ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition process. This transition is mandated by the federal government, and is expected to cost from $100k to several million dollars per practice / hospital. It is the equivalent of Y2K in the medical IT world.

A major pain point in the transition is that there is no automated mapping between the code systems. Instead, each ICD-9 code could be mapped to several ICD-10 codes. And a human must decide which one to use based on the patients condition -- after all, the goal of ICD-10 is to provide more granular information about the diagnosis. A paper-based or PC-based workflow is very inconvenient, since people needs to swtich between the medical record and code lookup all the time, resulting in wildly inaccurate coding, as it already happens today. See a story from Google Health if you are interested in how those ICD inaccuracies are affecting consumers.

This app relieves this pain by providing a calculator-like side screen that is dedicated to ICD codes search and mapping. It is an indispensable handy tool as the healthcare IT systems migrate from ICD-9 to ICD-10 coding systems.

This app also enables "early adopter" patients to check their own medical records for accuracy, and avoid potentially costly mistakes.
